New Requirements for Personal and Religious Belief Immunization Exemptions

Under a new law known as SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 exemptions based on personal and religious beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California.  Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations. Personal and religious beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.

For more information about SB 277, please see the Frequently Asked Questions available at: http://www.shotsforschool.org/laws/sb277faq/.

Thank you for helping us to keep our children and community healthy.

7th Grade Required Tdap Immunization

Immunization Requirement for the 2016-2017 School Year
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Immunization Requirements for ALL 7th Grade Students:
For the 2016-2017 school year, and all future school years, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization (called “Tdap”) prior to the start of school in the fall.*

This school immunization law, (Assembly Bill 354) affects all students in public and private schools.

Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months.  The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis.  Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.

*ANY STUDENT WHO HAS NOT PROVIDED PROOF OF THE TDAP VACCINATION BY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM SCHOOL UNTIL SUCH PROOF IS RECEIVED BY ROCKY POINT CHARTER SCHOOL.  THESE ABSENCES WILL BE COUNTED AS UNEXCUSED.

If your child is 10 years and older and has not yet received the Tdap pertussis booster shot, please do one of the following:
  • Contact your health care provider to schedule an appointment.
  • Contact the Shasta County Public Health Department to schedule an appointment at 225-5591.

Be sure to bring a copy of your child’s updated immunization record to the school office as soon as possible!  If you have any questions regarding this new law, please contact the school office at 225-0456.
